NurseJOB SUMMARY:Competent Clinician. Possesses knowledge and skill
to meet standards for competent professional nursing practice as
specified in the Texas Nurse Practice Act. Experienced,
knowledgeable, and skilled in specialty area. Competently functions
as a member of the interdisciplinary team. Practice is
characterized by predominantly interdependent decision-making.
Practice is problem focused and patient centered in the manner care
is provided. Provides safe and competent intraoperative patient
care. Actively acquire knowledge and skills specific to patients
undergoing a surgical procedure. Practice strong patient advocacy
role and diligence in the preoperative review of documents and
verification of surgical procedure, site, and other critical safety
checks prior to surgery. Safely circulate in emergent and urgent
surgical cases and collaborate with physicians and other members of
the surgical team during surgical time outs and debriefing
procedures. Enforces aseptic and sterile techniques to all aspects
of patient care. Effectively and safely operate highly specialize
OR equipment. Able to manage unexpected or emergency situations
that are commonly seen in assigned specialty population. Serves as
a resource for Nurse Clinician I or II. Can manage commonly seen
contingency situations that arise on the clinical unit. Provides
patient care through nursing practices based upon the American
Nurses Association Standards of Practice, Nursing Process and
UTMB's three domains for competency and advancement: Professional
Practice, Professional Performance and Performance
Improvement.Major Duties/Critical Tasks:Validates specialized
perioperative nursing knowledgeIndicates attainment of current
perioperative nursing practice standardsConsults and coordinates
with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and
evaluate patient care plansParticipate actively in our surgical
time out and debriefingEnsures that operating on correct patient
and the correct procedure is being performedObserves, checks, and
monitors all equipment used during surgery to confirm they are
running smoothlyAssists in positioning, responding to
comfort/safety of patientProvides for accurate care, handling, and
documentation of surgical specimensSupport the surgical
technologist during the case effectively.Performs surgical counts
(Initial, Closing and Final) and reconcile incorrect counts per
policyDocument accurately all surgical procedures, documentation,
supplies and implantsParticipate actively and support departmental
initiatives related to patient safety, efficiency, cost
containment, staff and physician satisfaction, and other projects
mandated by the department.Observes and enforces strict standards
of asepsisAble to take call status and respond to the emergencies
per policy, "stay days" and work long and unpredictable
hours.Thrive and maintain collegiality and professionalism during
high-stress situations.Actively invest and engage in improving or

unit specific compliance requirements for health screening,
training, attendance, safety, and CPR.Adheres to internal controls
and reporting structure.Perform related duties as requiredRequired
Education/Experience:RN with current license or valid permit to
practice professional nursing in Texas.Two (2) years of inpatient
hospital experience as an RN with at least two (2) years in
specialty area assigned (ICU, Cath Lab, and other procedural areas)
within the last 2 years.Must have current BLS certification
obtained through American Heart Association (AHA)Equipment:Standard
operating room patient care equipment, supplies, and mechanical
devices for a selected patient population. Highly advanced OR
equipment such as the DaVinci Robot, navigation systems, different
radiologic imaging modalities and specialize OR tables used in
Bariatric, Orthopedic, Vascular and Neuro surgical services.
Standard hospital- related office equipment. Show competency in
point of care testing (POCT) and quality requirements for that
testing.Work Environments:General OR and/or specialty call requires
staff to work unpredictable hoursExposure to radiation during
certain surgical procedures is necessaryWork in a fast-paced, high
stress and multidisciplinary environmentManeuver large and delicate
equipment such as specialty OR tables, microscopes, navigation
systems and DaVinci.Highly transparent environment in relation to
reporting of patient events and efficiency metrics.Work in a high
stress environmentWork environment is in a comfortable indoor
area.Conditions such as noise, odors, cramped workspace and/or
fumes could sometimes cause discomfort.Moderate to extreme physical
effort may be required, such as walking, standing, performing CPR,
and lifting materials, equipment, objects, and/or
patients.Occasional lifting may be very heavy and awkward, over 50
lbs.Vision, hearing, talking, and sense of touch abilities must be
adequate to enable one to perform tasks quickly and accurately such
as reading small print, reading from monitoring equipment, defining
details, sending, and receiving clear and accurate oral
communication.Frequent periods of concentrated or focused attention
will be needed to interpret visual, auditory, and sensory
inputs.Minimum to work and stay active is 2 weekend shifts per
month.Alertness and careful attention to detail will be required to
avoid injury.May be exposed to such occupational hazards as
communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, ionizing &
non-ionizing radiation, hazardous medications and disoriented or
