Professor and Section Chief of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery
Serving in the Department of Surgery as Section Chief for Trauma
and Acute Care Surgery, the person in this position will oversee
the evolution of comprehensive surgical services that covers all
UTMB locations (Galveston, League City, Clear Lake, and
Angleton-Danbury Campuses). This will include oversight of the
surgical aspects of the Trauma and Acute Care Service. This
position will also concurrently serve as the Medical Director of
the Trauma Service for the UTMB Health System and will be
responsible for Level I Trauma verification in Galveston and
subsequent Trauma Center verifications at other locations.
Essential Job Functions:
--- Work with the Health System and the surgical departments to
develop a vision and strategic plan for Trauma and Acute Care
--- Create an overview of the services currently provided and/or to
be developed at the various locations/campuses.
--- Create a timeline for meeting goals and tactics.
--- Define how Trauma/Acute Care Surgery services will be covered
at the various locations to meet the needs of the patients and the
emergency rooms and operating rooms.
--- Supervise faculty in the Section and determine which general
surgeons(s) will participate in the trauma panel.
--- Partner with community surgeons and physicians at all
--- Lead the evolution of ICU care in conjunction with Anesthesia
and Pulmonary/Critical care at various locations resulting in a
single multidisciplinary service. (The goal is to create a single
unified surgical ICU with one team covering the care of the
--- Maintain the Level I Trauma status of our flagship hospital and
potentially evolve the Clear Lake and/or the League City Campuses
into a Level III or greater Trauma Center(s), based on campus
--- Supervise and participate in the call schedule/coverage of the
various facilities and in-house call coverage of Jennie Sealy
--- Focus on efficient use of resources.
--- Work with the trauma, acute care surgery faculty and Health
System leaders to continually improve the cost of care through
process improvement and cost of care initiatives based on
--- Focus on optimal quality outcomes as measured by Vizient, CMS,
Texas Medicaid and TQIP with an emphasis on meeting annual quality
and value targets.
--- Oversee recruitment of individuals in Trauma/Acute Care Surgery
Services in conjunction with the Division Chief of Burn, Trauma and
Acute Care Surgery and the Department Chair.
--- Partner with the Health System leadership, faculty, and nursing
to create a culture of safety and a culture of professionalism with
a focus on patient safety.
--- Work with the Health System leadership, faculty, ED physicians,
and nursing, create a work environment in the trauma services that
is collegial and collaborative where open communication creates an
environment to provide the best care for patients.
--- Assure that the students, residents, fellows and other trainees
have a learning experience that emphasizes the most contemporary
approaches to trauma care in a professional learning
