Min Qualifications

--- M.D., D.O. or equivalent degree
--- Board certification in a clinical medicine discipline such as Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine
--- Texas Medical License or ability to obtain such license within 6 months of start date
--- Minimum of 5 years of experience in the practice of aviation/aerospace medicine

Salary Range

Specific Job Related Duties

This position involves activities in three primary areas:

(1) The position will include serving as the Medical Director of the Aerospace Medicine Center (the aerospace medicine clinic at UTMB). Clinical responsibilities include conducting pilot aviation medical examinations, spaceflight participant medical evaluations, air crew fitness for duty and disability evaluations, monitoring of pilots in the FAA program and other aerospace related clinical activities in the Aerospace Medicine Center.

(2) Education responsibilities include serving as the director for the medical school aerospace medicine track, teaching and mentoring students in the M.P.H. Program, and teaching in courses such as the Principles of Aviation and Space Medicine course and other courses with preventive medicine content that may be developed.

(3) Research responsibilities include supporting grants and contracts with the FAA Center of Excellence for Commercial Space Transportation (FAA COE CST), the NASA Human Research Program's Translational Research Institute for Space Health (TRISH), Human Health and Performance Contract (HHPC), and other organizations.

Specific Job Related Duties:

As the clinic director this position will involve developing and executing a business development plan, partnering with internal and external stakeholders including engaging in networking opportunities; establishing strategic and tactical goals for clinical operations; leading and overseeing guidance for developing and maintaining budgeting; and delivering educational presentations to internal and external customers regarding aerospace medicine.

The clinic director will also supervise the Manager of the Aerospace Medicine Center (AMC) in managing the day to day clinical support and business operations of the AMC; ensure high quality medical evaluation and care of pilots and air crew members evaluated through the AMC; ensure proper interpretation and application of aerospace medical standards to determine medical qualifications for FAA and various corporate aviation-related medical requirements as well as FAA and other governmental Commercial Spaceflight standards for future commercial spaceflight crew and passengers.

Other duties include: acting as site supervisor for residents during Aerospace Medicine Center clinical rotations; serving as Principal Investigator or Co-investigator for funded projects; mentoring aerospace medicine residents in research projects during their residency program; assisting in teaching and mentoring in the M.P.H. program in the Department of Preventive Medicine and Population Health (PMPH).

--- Senior Aviation Medical Examiner
--- Human Intervention Motivation Study (HIMS) trained
--- Demonstrated success in research projects and publication of research results
--- Experience with teaching graduate level coursework
--- Board Certification by the American Board of Preventive Medicine in Aerospace Medicine
--- Experience in providing medical support for human spaceflight activities
