Job Description Job Description The City of Tomball is accepting
applications for the position of Utilities Serviceperson in the
Public Works Department. This position performs a variety of
unskilled tasks in the operation, construction, and maintenance of
all City facilities and system operations. Under general direction,
perform general labor work or repair, for water, sewer and gas
systems and lines, restoring service and preventing health hazards.
This is the entry-level class in the maintenance series. Positions
in this class perform physical labor in construction, maintenance
and landscaping assignments. Work is closely supervised and
performed according to established procedures or specific oral or
written instruction. Generally, work is observed and reviewed both
during its performance and upon completion. Changes in procedures
or exception to rules are explained in detail as they arise.
Maintenance workers can be assigned to any one of the field
maintenance divisions or Utility Billing Department.
QUALIFICATIONS: Experience in operating excavation equipment such
as backhoe, loaders and other specialized equipment. Must be able
to obtain Class D water and wastewater licenses within one year
from hire. Must possess and maintain a valid Class C Texas motor
vehicle operator's license. Must possess H. S. Diploma or GED. Must
be able to successfully pass pre-employment drug screening and
random drug screening in the DOT covered position pool. ESSENTIAL
DUTIES: Follow safe work practices and observe safety rules and
precautions. Install and repair water, gas and sewer systems,
including, but not limited to water, gas and sewer taps, meters,
manholes, lines, valves, regulators, lift stations, pumps, storage
tanks and plant components. Maintain and test sewer line's function
ad capacity by smoke testing, dye monitoring and sewer cleaning
operations. Read meters. Set up and take down traffic cones and
barricades to channel traffic and/or for special events. Respond to
emergency repair requests and work orders. Read maps, blueprints,
diagrams and grade stakes. Repair and/or report vandalism, damage
or major maintenance requirements. Load, unload and transport
material, equipment, dirt, and construction materials, etc. Clean,
wash, lubricate, fuel, maintain and stock City service vehicles.
Install, repair and replace underground water, wastewater mains and
gas lines and service laterals, using basic plumbing tools, taping
machine, pipe cutters, threader, reamer, pipe wrenches and assorted
pneumatic and hydraulic tools. Make excavations in concrete,
pavement, and dirt to repair water, sewer and gas lines using a
spade, pick, digging bar, broom, and pneumatic and hydraulic tools,
including jackhammers and concrete saws. Clean and vacuum sewer
lines, using flusher trucks, rodder trucks, hand rods and
high-pressure water hoses. Back fill open trenches and tamp holes
and repair curbs, streets and sidewalks, after work is completed
using gas operated or hand tampers. Dig and shore trenches, using
shoring jacks, timbers, ladders and plywood. Use gas detector to
test quality of air in vaults and confines workspaces. Clean
ditches, dig trenches and post holes. Install, clean, test, repair
and replace water meters and meter boxes. Maintain pumping stations
and perform preventive maintenance on alarm systems, motors, pumps,
gauges, air compressors, chlorine application devices, hydraulic
valves. Inspect system for leaks, construction flaws or root
invasions. Remove manhole frames and covers, using jack hammer.
Enter manholes, using tripod, harness, winch, air blower, wearing
of breathing apparatus and protective clothing. Assist in concrete
and asphalt patching repairs or replacements. Perform minor
building maintenance, cleaning and custodial duties. Turn, install,
check, tighten, repair and replace water valves, using wrenches and
valve keys. Check and maintain camera and low monitoring equipment.
Use video camera to film pipeline flow inspections. Assist in
building and painting a variety of City facilities and structures,
using hammers, nails, drills, saws, levels, measuring tapes,
brushes and rollers. Check, repair and install fire hydrants, using
flow meter, spanner, valve key and hydrant wrench. Measure and map
out valve locations. Maintain daily work logs. May work
independently in the performance of regular work duties. Give out
routine factual information or respond to routine inquiries from
the public and warn them of hazards. Respond to afterhours
call-outs. Other duties as assigned. UTILITIES SERVICEPERSON I To
be hired at this level you must meet the qualifications listed
above, possess Class D water and wastewater licenses and have one
year of experience working in water, sewer or gas systems.
UTILITIES SERVICEPERSON II To be hired at this level you must meet
the qualifications listed above, possess Class C water and
wastewater licenses and have two years of experience working in
water, sewer or gas systems. SALARY: Utilities Serviceperson Hiring
range - $36,109 - $37,918 ($17.36 hourly to $18.23 hourly) Salary
range - $36,109 - $54,184 Utilities Serviceperson I Hiring range -
$39,811 - $41,808 ($19.14 hourly to $20.10 hourly) Salary range -
$39,811 - $59,738 Utilities Serviceperson II Hiring range $41,808 -
$43,909 ($20.10 hourly to $21.11 hourly) Salary range - $41,808 -
$62,712 Salary is dependent on qualifications and certifications
